There’s No Place Like The Internets

I recently learned about a website where you can "design" your own shoes and they will make them for you. YES! I KNOW. It’s called Milk & Honey. You can make pumps, flats, or sandals, and they say wedges and booties are coming soon. They’re not cheap, but they are not entirely unaffordable either. It depends on your budget, but mostly on how desperately you want the shoes in your head to be on your feet. The prices are based on how many bells and whistles (or really, bows and ruffles) you add, and the materials of course. They all seem to be over $200, and very quickly get to $300.

There are so many options! Leather, pony, velvet, glitter, snakeskin, polka dot and more. There are a ton of different variations of straps and toe shapes and platforms and heel heights. The heel height is where they lost me a bit. You can make a shoe with a 2” heel or a 5” heel, and the preview of your design will look the same. For some reason they don’t adjust the height in the mock-up so you have to visualize it on your own. I feel like the height of the heel really makes a difference in the proportion of the shoe, so I wish their otherwise fairly awesome design tool would handle the heels better.

But still! If you were getting married and desperately wanted your “something blue” to be sparkly platform loafer-slingbacks with zebra accents, you would have your choice between ice blue and peacock blue glitter. But why choose one? Is it a summer wedding? How about some gingham?

It doesn’t matter how ridiculous, they will make those shoes for you. But you have to wonder, if you submitted something really hideous (see above), would they call you and say “Really!? I would call you and say “Really!?” Actually, I’d probably email. It would be just that word, and you would know what I was talking about.

The “inspiration gallery” shows shoes that are already made, so you can get a better idea of what the finished product will look like. You can see the textures and the different kids of heels. Most of them are pretty normal looking, but there are a few cool ones.

The return policy is interesting, in that they HAVE one. They say their shoes are either returnable or exchangeable, but they don’t exactly make it easy for you. My favorite part is where they tell you if your crazy design came out too crazy, don’t return them, “just pair them with simple jeans and solid top – any crazy shoe can be rocked with the right attitude!” Hah. How about THESE:

Should you decide you need a pair of custom shoes, you definitely have to plan ahead. The shoes take 6-8 weeks to make, plus another 3-5 days to ship. If you want some special red and green polka dot snakeskin sparkle shoes to wear on Christmas, you’d better get designing.
